Dermal Fillers

Dermal filling is performed by the augmentation and better definition of the lips, treatment of the nasolabial folds (“Chinese Moustache”), lip-jaw grooves (“Marionette Lines”), perioral wrinkles (“Bar Codes”), facial fat repositioning, correction of small nasal deformities, depressed scars and of acne. Other than the face, it is also used for the hands and neck, in the latter case with a hydrating filler.

This procedure is usually performed in the consultation clinic using products formulated from biodegradable substances: Hyaluronic acid (the most commonly used), Calcium hydroxyapatite and Polylactic acid. Hyaluronic acid is the product with the greatest variety of options, making it very dynamic in its use, and which comes in the following brands approved by ANVISA: Juvéderm® (Allergan; France), Restylane® (Galderma; Sweden), Belotero® (Merz; Switzerland), Teosyal® (Teoxane; Switzerland), Hialurox® (Termofrio; Brazil).

Calcium hydroxyapatite, apart from being a filler, is also a biostimulator of collagen. Calcium hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring substance in the human body and is therefore completely compatible with the body. Its main representative, for use in Brazil, is Radiesse® (Merz; USA).

Polylactic acid is a collagen biostimulator completely biocompatible with human beings, as well as being completely biodegradable. Its filler effect takes place as it reestablishes skin structure. Its main representative, for use in Brazil, is Sculptra® (Galderma; Italy).

Filling can also be performed using the body fat of the patient, removed by liposuction in a surgical environment. Dr. Douglas Westphal uses the Hyaluronic acid brands Juvéderm® and Restylane®, Calcium hydroxyapatite from Radiesse® and Polylactic acid from Sculptra®.
